Frequently Asked Questions

If you're having a problem with your HDLoader, please check if the answer is here before contacting us.

General

Q: Will this conflict with my existing setup?
A: HD Loader works with any (functioning) PS2. It doesn't matter if you had it 'modchipped' or if you want to play online games and/or games using the hard drive.

Q: Does HD Loader work on the new slimline PS2 (SCPH-70000)?
A: The new slimline PS2 is not compatible with HD Loader. It has an inbuilt ethernet interface and no support for a hard disk.

Q: Will this conflict with my existing setup?
A: HD Loader works with any (functioning) PS2. It doesn't matter if you had it 'modchipped' or if you want to play online games and/or games using the hard drive.

Q: How many games can I store with HDLoader?
A: This varies greatly depending on the disk size and your games. Even the smallest hard drives will support a handful of games. Speak to us if you need to discuss your requirements when ordering.

Q: Can PS1 games be stored with HD Loader?
A: No, however the Gametronix Xbox upgrade allows you to store and manage PS1 games off a hard disk.

Q: Can I backup might burnt/downloaded/pirated whatever games?
A: No, HD Loader does not support this, please do not ask us either.

Q: Can I transfer a disc image/game files over the network?
A: Officially it does not. However there is an open-source program that we support and will provide on request. We support this because the transfer speeds off a PC's DVD-ROM are often much faster than the PS2 it also has other features. Contact us for more information.

Q: Can I backup and run imported games ie. NTSC?
A: Officially - no. See answer above.

Software

Q: How do I access the 'compatibility' menu?
A: In the main menu select the game you wish to set the compatibility mode(s) for. Press select and a menu will appear where you can enable/disable each of the three different modes.

Q: You have mentioned that 'current versions' do not support something, are there updates?
A: Updated versions of the HDLoader disc have been proposed. They will be made available for a small fee through a trade-in program.

Q: Which Hard Drives are compatible with HD Loader?
A: Please check the PS2 Hard Drive Compatibility Chart (external site).

Q: My drive is not detected by HD Loader, what do I do?
A: Check everything is connected and the jumper settings are set to Master. Otherwise your drive may be faulty or incompatible.

Q: Does it matter how fast or how much cache the drive has?
A: Marginally important, in fact we recommend using a slower 5400RPM drive for less heat and at a lower price.

Q: Does the hard drive have to be formatted?
A: The HDLoader software formats the hard disk in Sony's APA file system the first time you use the drive.

Q: Why don't you support drive's over 120GB?
A: There is a low level BIOS limitation that prevents the PS2 from 'seeing' any data above ~137GB (unformatted), so any larger drive is simply a waste of money.
